The 21st National Prayer Breakfast took place at the Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi, bringing together President William Ruto, his deputy Rigathi Gachagua, and various political and religious leaders.
The event, with the theme “Hope,” is an annual interdenominational prayer gathering organized by Members of Parliament.
President Ruto and Deputy President Gachagua were accompanied by their spouses, First Lady Rachel Ruto and Pastor Dorcas Rigathi.
Other notable figures present included Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, and Senate counterpart Amason Kingi, along with several members of parliament.
However, many Kenyans noticed that Deputy President Gachagua seemed visibly unhappy during the proceedings.
This unhappiness was likely due to the ongoing divisions within the ruling party, which have been a cause for concern among the public.
Just a few days before the event, Gachagua had criticized some Rift Valley leaders for undermining him in the Mt. Kenya region.
He expressed anger and accused these leaders, who have close ties to the president, of using their position to plan for the 2032 succession politics to his disadvantage.
Gachagua also revealed that President Ruto’s allies were already holding meetings in the Mt. Kenya region to strategize for the 2032 succession race.
The presence of an unhappy Gachagua at the National Prayer Breakfast has raised concerns among Kenyans about the stability and unity within the ruling party.
