Tanzanian gospel sensation Christina Shusho has made a triumphant return with her latest track, which is already causing a stir in Kenya. The song, titled “Zakayo” after the biblical figure Zacchaeus, was teased by Shusho on social media on April 22, 2024. Sung in Swahili and loosely translated into English, the song tells the story of a wealthy tax collector named Zakayo who was curious about Jesus. The release date for the song has yet to be announced, but it has already garnered thousands of reactions on social media.

The title of the song alone has sparked excitement among Kenyans, who have playfully urged Shusho to use President William Ruto’s pictures as the cover art. President Ruto is famously known as Zakayo due to his implementation of new taxes and the increase of existing ones. Unfortunately, these policies have made the cost of living in Kenya unbearable for those living below the poverty line. Basic commodities such as fuel, electricity, food, and public transport have seen significant price hikes, while housing, education, and healthcare have become increasingly unaffordable due to rising bills.

Despite the criticism and nicknames, President Ruto remains steadfast in his commitment to serving the country. He stated, “I don’t care if people call me names. I will continue to do what is right for our country regardless of the names people call me, including Zakayo.” Meanwhile, Shusho’s fans eagerly await the release of “Zakayo,” and it will be interesting to see how Kenyans respond to the song, given the overwhelming reactions on social media. Three years ago, Shusho released her hit song “Shusha Nyavu” (cast your nets), which was inspired by Luke 5:4-6, where Jesus instructed Simon Peter to cast his nets for a bountiful catch after a night of unsuccessful fishing.
