The Russian Embassy in Kenya made an exciting announcement on Monday, April 1, revealing their plans to establish an innovation center in collaboration with local partners. This center will be responsible for conducting tests on flying taxis in selected areas before their widespread introduction. The Embassy specifically mentioned that the initial flights would operate between Nairobi (Wilson) and Diani (Ukunda), urging people not to miss out on this incredible opportunity.
Although the cost of these rides was not disclosed, the choice of the Wilson to Diani route in Kwale County is strategically significant. Diani is renowned as one of Kenya’s most popular tourist destinations, making it an ideal location for testing the flying taxis. The innovation center has already announced its plans to develop unmanned aerial vehicles in 2022, showcasing Kenya’s commitment to embracing cutting-edge technology.
Kenya is set to join a select group of countries that have successfully implemented autonomous drone taxis. In 2023, Israel achieved a major milestone by conducting successful tests for flying taxis capable of transporting both passengers and luggage. Meanwhile, global superpowers like the United States and China have set their sights on achieving this feat by 2025. Kenya, too, had initially planned to launch its flying taxis in 2025. While the local companies partnering with the Russian company in operating these taxis have not been disclosed yet, the anticipation surrounding this innovative project continues to grow.
