Professor Joshua Arimi from Meru University recently presented an innovative project involving the creation of energy drinks and wine from muguka and miraa. The team of researchers worked diligently to develop these products, aiming to showcase the positive aspects of these traditionally consumed plants. The focus of the research was primarily on the nutritional and chemical composition of miraa and muguka, shedding light on their potential health benefits.
The researchers successfully produced chewing gum from both muguka and miraa, further demonstrating the versatility of these plants. The products developed, such as Miraa Bamboocha wine and Muguka Energy Drink, are a testament to the team’s dedication to adding value to these raw plants. Despite not being visually appealing to some, miraa and muguka are scientifically known as Catha Edulis (khat) and are rich in vital chemicals, polyphenols, and nutraceutical compounds.
By incorporating polyphenols, which are micronutrients naturally found in plants, into the products, the researchers aimed to provide a healthier alternative for consumers. The ultimate goal of this project was to regulate the consumption of stimulants like miraa and muguka, especially among underage individuals. Through value addition and innovative product development, the team hopes to change the perception of these plants and promote responsible consumption practices in the community.
