ODM leader Raila Odinga has called on party leaders to put an end to their divisive ethnic and regional campaigns aimed at succeeding him. Recognizing the potential for division within the party, Raila urged aspiring leaders to exercise patience and respect his current position as the party leader. Drawing an analogy, he likened their actions to those of individuals seeking to inherit a woman while her husband is still alive. Emphasizing the importance of unity, Raila stressed that the ODM party requires the collective efforts of all its members in order to grow stronger.

During a recent fundraiser for orphans at the Malindi Islamic Center and Orphanage in Kilifi, Raila reiterated his stance on the matter. He acknowledged the concerns raised by leaders from the Coastal region and expressed his desire to prevent any form of division within the party. Raila discouraged leaders from publicly declaring their preferred successors based solely on regional affiliations, emphasizing that such actions would weaken the party. However, he did acknowledge that members were entitled to their opinions and could express their preferences if he were to secure the African Union Commission chairperson position.

Raila’s message to ODM leaders was clear: the party’s strength lies in its unity. He urged them to refrain from engaging in regional politics that could potentially fracture the party’s cohesion. Instead, Raila encouraged leaders to focus on the collective goals and aspirations of the ODM party. While he acknowledged the aspirations of those who wished to succeed him, Raila emphasized the need for patience and unity until a consensus could be reached. As the party leader, Raila assured his fellow members that he would work towards a smooth transition of leadership, should he secure the African Union Commission chairperson role.
