Mumias East MP Peter Salasya is facing financial difficulties and has requested the court’s permission to pay off a debt of Sh500,000 in instalments. In an affidavit filed on March 28, Salasya explained that he is unable to pay the full amount at once due to his existing financial obligations. He has proposed to pay Sh50,000 monthly until the debt is settled. Salasya expressed his frustration with the respondent, stating that while they appeared willing to negotiate, they have also sought warrants and police assistance. The MP is seeking a temporary stay of execution of the judgment until his application is heard and determined by the court.
Salasya’s application comes after a judgment was entered against him by the Small Claims Court in Kakamega. The judgment, issued on November 27, 2023, favored a businessman who had lent the MP Sh500,000. In addition to repaying the principal amount, Salasya was also ordered to pay interest at the court’s rate and the costs of the suit. The MP emphasized the potential loss, inconvenience, and embarrassment he would face if the execution of the judgment proceeds without a stay. He believes that paying the debt in instalments is a more feasible solution given his current financial situation.
Recognizing the urgency of his financial predicament, Salasya has taken the necessary steps to address his debt. By filing an application in court, he hopes to temporarily halt the execution of the judgment until his request to repay the debt in monthly instalments is considered. Salasya acknowledges his financial obligations and the limitations they impose on his ability to settle the debt immediately. He remains hopeful that the court will grant his request, allowing him to fulfill his financial obligations gradually and avoid further inconvenience and embarrassment.
